The Difference Between NIRTECH® and Polarized Sunglasses

Oct 24, 2025

What Makes NIRTECH® Lenses Different from Regular Polarized Sunglasses

While shopping for sunglasses, we all know that polarized sunglasses can reduce glare, make the view more comfortable in bright conditions, and keep your eyes less irritated under the sun. But that’s where it’s about. So, can a pair of sunglasses do more than that? What if there were a pair that could keep your eyes cooler, provide sharper vision, and reduce eye strain?

NINES® Optic developed NIRTECH® lenses to cover not only polarized light but also IR, providing infrared protection for sunglasses wearers. NIRTECH® lenses are designed with advanced multi-layer protection embedded in the lens. It is not just about being visually better; it’s about protecting your eyes from the full range of the sunlight spectrum, including the infrared rays that most sunglasses ignore. Once you experience it, it’s hard to go back.

TheLimitationof Regular Polarized Sunglasses

First of all, we should have a simple understanding of how polarized sunglasses filter glare. It blocks horizontal light waves from reflective surfaces.

Imagine that the light wave goes randomly in all directions and evenly passes through, which causes your eyes to feel uncomfortable and shiny.

Polarized lenses can filter out all horizontal light and only allow vertical light waves to go through.

But what’s the catch? Nearly all of the polarized sunglasses today are focused on UV rays, which has become quite a standard in the market.

Some of them claim to have IR protection, but when the lenses are put to the test, the IR still passes through the lenses. ManyIR protectionclaims on the market are minimal and misleading. The other sunglasses may make the lenses darker to claim to reduce IR passes through; however, there is no protection at all when using the light wave testing tool to test it.

Are polarized Sunglasses Good?

In simple terms, yes, it is the best way to reduce glare and reduce light reflection from bright surfaces.

But what exactly defines a good polarized sunglasses? In our design and engineering process, we know that the coating is one of the most important parts.

As our brand name, NINES, it defines the process of the layers of the lens, with nine layers that form into one. We notice the issue with traditional heat dipping during the coating process, which may not apply the coating material evenly due to the liquid form. With uneven coating, you will get foggy vision and scatter light unevenly, which reduces sharpness.

Also, the top coating may get worn and start peeling off. It will cause your eyes to feel uneasy and light, which may cause eye discomfort.

How NIRTECH® works

So, NINES® patented its coating process with a special formula that uses low temperature with film coating to achieve an even coating process, a higher light passthrough rate, an IR protection layer embedded, and an anti-reflection coating at the back.

As standard UV protection, most of the sunglasses can achieve 99% UV protection. The key advantage of NINES® NIRTECH® is that it blocks over 85% of infrared light (IR light) and keeps your eyes relaxed.

So, ladies, think about the wrinkle problem that may be caused by the UV and IR radiation; now we've got all covered with NIRTECH® polarized sunglasses.

Inside the NIRTECH® Polarized Lenses

We break down the details of important layers of the NIRTECH® lens.

  • Outer shield – Scratch resistance and hydrophobic
  • High Contrast – Enhances depth and color within the dark area
  • Infrared Protection – Blocks over 85% of IR from the sun

Is IR Protection Being Unnecessary?

Many of you may think it's just a little bit of sun, I am wearing sunglasses already, and does it really matter that I need IR protection?

Well, the short answer is, IR is usually what causes your eyes to feel uncomfortable, because it is unseen light that passes through the sunglasses, you won’t notice, but you will feel the heat build up and eye stress caused by the IR.

Even in cooler weather, infrared rays are always present. The lower sun angles from fall and winter actually increase direct IR exposure. This makes many everyday outdoor goers experience eye fatigue and irritation.

That’s why we utilize the problems learned from professional anglers and apply them to everyday use of outdoor sunglasses.

Built for True Eye Protection

We built and engineered NINES® sunglasses with affordable features that enhance visibility and protection.

Not like regular polarized sunglasses that will slowly lose their clarity, we preserved the color and enhanced the clarity.

Once you experience NIRTECH® with NINES® sunglasses, it’s hard to settle for other brands.
